Dodge trucks from 7.5(6.7's) up until they added the DEF this year get low mileage and have a few issues with the smog stuff. Ford's and Chevy's have the CP4.2 injection pump and Ford seems to not want to stand behind it with a warranty!
I think the new RAM with the Aisin auto tranny and DEF is the way to go!

Not sure what you consider "low" fuel economy? My 07 Cummins 6.7L (yes it is an early build date) dually with 4.10 rear end handles my 13,500 pound fiver really well. I can run with the cruise control on all day and it returns 10.5-11.5 MPG. Solo I have gotten 18, but the norm is 17. I consider that pretty good for so much truck. IF the OP decides to go Ford, the 6.4 has some issues. Search for the thread running right now about the 6.4L Ford issues. There is no way I would consider a 6.0L.
I will admit that the early 2007 5.9L Cummins is probably the motor of choice. However unless you can find a manual trans version, it will have only a 4 speed auto and no exhaust brake. Both of which are probably not be a deal breaker for a pristine truck. But I would go for the 6.7L with EB and 6 speed auto if I had the chance. Also consider that the Cummins contains approx 25% fewer parts. But as others have said, it is all up to what YOU want, not what we say is best.
