Freezer Yes, Refer No

Arrived at our 07 Cameo yesterday, which has been sitting on our lot over the hot summer in Palm Springs, Calif. Haven't left it here before, doing the trip with the rig back and forth to Seattle area. Everything seems to be fine except the refrigerator, which does not cool down; doesn't seem to be working at all. But the freezer is fine! Since they both run off the same compressor, I'm confused as to what problem is. Any ideas appreciated.

I live in Phoenix where summers are hot. Freezer gets cold in 3-4 hours. The fridge will take 8 hours or more. If the afternoon temps are in the 100's the fridge will never cool down below about 45.

My fridge is on the slide. RV shops have told me that some changes to ducting to improve airflow between the top and bottom vents will greatly improve fridge cooling in warm temps.

Here is one baffle and fan mod to improve draft cooling

    Another baffle idea

  • Whoops - forgot that RV's use absorption to cool, sorry about that. Anyway, no compressor, and the several admonishments to be patient were correct as refer is cooling fine now. Seems like over the years, that the thing showed cooling temps pretty rapidly. Obviously a little different when it's been sitting in the heat.

Thanks to each of you for the good advice.
  • You are not very clear in your post

Do you have a 'residential' type refrigerator.......one with a compressor?
    OR
Do you have an RV refrigerator......absorption type/no compressor? (Or don't know and just think you have a compressor)??

Has the refrigerator been ON---in service....while sitting in Palm Springs?
    OR
You have just turned it ON after arriving in Palm Springs?

RV refrigerators do NOT have compressors...unless you changed out that 2007 Cameo standard rv fridge...they are absorption

Absorption refrigerators need to be LEVEL when ON due to heat transfer & gravity flow of coolant. Off level will damage them

Absorption refrigerators need 8-12 hours to fully cool down when turning ON after being off/warm.
Freezer section cools first before food section will. Freezer needs to get down to 10*F or lower before food section can fully cool down. Freezer cooling section is first in cooling process and absorbs all the cooling effect...none left over for food section until freezer is cold

    So.........patience.

OR if fridge was left ON.......cooling unit has blockage between freezer cooler section (low temp evaporate) and food section cooler (high temp evaporator).
  • If it's been that hot, you will have to wait maybe 12-18 hrs for the refer section to cool down. Be patient.
  • It could be frosted up between the freezer and fridge if you have one similiar to a residential fridge. They use the freezer to cool the fridge. Typically rv fridges are different though, but since you said it has a compressor...
