Fresh Water Fill Question

So in all my years of camping I've never used the fresh water tank in any of the campers I've owned. End of this month I will be camping for 4 days with no water hook-ups and had a question about filling it up.

Mine fills thru the city water hook up and the indicator light is inside. I've heard you don't want to over fill so do you fill till the indicator lights on full or stop before. I don't want to blow a fitting off so just curious. Thanks
  • I would suggest too that you don't turn the hose on full blast and over pressure the tank. Nice and easy until its full.

I am just curious as I have not seen a freshwater fill through the city water before. You have a new Montana so I must be too old to have seen this. Is there a bypass switch or something when you hook to city water inlet to fill the freshwater tank?

On our Mobile Suites, there's a single hookup for the city water. The city water supply then goes to a rotary multi-position valve with the handle located in the service bay. One of the settings on the valve diverts city water to fill the fresh water tank.

  • We've been drinking the water out of our tank since it was new. Never got sick. With that being said I sanitize it every year. Also when filling I fill till it overflows. If I go by the fresh water gage it would never get filled. Both the gage and the pump draw tube are off. I can keep filling for quite a while after it shows full. And just the opposite when using it. It will show 1/3 but then it starts sucking air. I then add two 7 gal jugs of water to get by for one more day. Then when I get home and pull the drain it empties a lot of water. Probably 10 gals. So the point is your gages are probably not correct so filling to the overflow will guarantee you have a full tank.

Make sure that you rinse the tank completely. Put a lot of water into the tank along with a cup or so bleach. Let it sit for awhile; drain the tank, and repeat.

I would never drink water from the fresh water tank. You really do not know what******is still in the tank. Buy a bunch of bottled water for drinking. Use the fresh water tank to shower, wash dishes, flush out the toilet.
  • As in an above post watch the overflow line. The noise of the air escaping will usually change as the tank is near full.

I would not recommend using only the indicator light. If you were to completely fill the tank and the indicator light failed to indicate you could over pressure the tank as the overflow may not handle the volume of water being put in.
  • And search for articles about sanitizing the fresh water tank.
  • it will have an overflow under the trailer when the tank is full. Just watch for it to start flowing
