front landing gear motor

Have you periodically lubricated the worm gear drive in the landing gears? I had an issue where without warning my landing gear jacks started binding severely when trying to raise the trailer. I'm wondering if yours are binding to the point it is causing them to draw excessive current.

If you can take the weight off the landing gear, as in hooking your trailer up to your tow vehicle, and then raising and lowering the jacks, it might tell you if this is your issue.

We worked on the landing gear. We used a bunch of penetrating oil, and got the legs to move. Then we used 30 weight in the worm gears to get then working freely. Lubed everything with lithium grease. Waiting on the gear box to arrive as the old one has a broken part. Thanks guys for the help!

If the 5th wheel is very heavy, you could end up doing this again. You might look at one of the dual motor setups, like Bulldog. They are the way all the heavier trailers should have come from the factory.

Try loosely chocking your trucks tires (to allow some movement), then place your truck in neutral when raising the front of the trailer. Use blocks under your landing gear to keep your legs as short as possible to prevent binding.

2008 trailer, presumably the first setup lasted 11 years. I'd personally have no problem just running with it if it's working.

I haven't tried the neutral of the truck, but I do use blocks under the jacks. thanks for the tip I'll try it this weekend if my gear box gets here.

Could be a bit of a bind, what I do with both hitches I tow with ,the Andersen , and the conventional hitch is that I make sure the chocks are tight against the wheels. Generally when I come off the ball, there is no movement in the fifth wheel. I actually tap the chocks with a hammer to get them tight for that very reason of too much movement in the fifth wheel coming off the hitch .

Another thing, some will not want to hear this, but I too kept blowing 30 amp. fuses. I eliminated the fuse, although the system is connected to higher rated fuse on the front wall of the battery compartment , this was 10 years ago, motor still going strong on my 2008 3400 RL Montana, no blown fuse, which is if not mistaken 50 amps. Of course do this at your own peril :) . If you are planing on a new motor try a little higher amp fuse, you will not be the first . May work out, it did for me.
