Fuel station and gen set...

Stupid question...but its hot even up here in the NW and i think Ive fried my brain washing the toyhauleer it the last couple days. Im having a couple issues with my Onan 5500 gen set running on my Raptor and my question is: On the fuel station on this toyhauler, is the pickup installed in the fuel tank for the gen set allow me to run it until the tank is empty...or is it like a motorhome so it wont let me run it when its 1/4 tank or lower? My gage says 1/4 tank and the gen set runs for about 5 minutes and quits...cant remember the code...but its about getting fuel. I dont want to add more fuel if the dang thing if it has an issue and at least then i will know if its because the tank is low or i have issues with the filters/carb. thanks!

  • Check the reset on the gas pump if your pump has been left on it will shut down......generator will start but will only run for about 3 to 5 minutes....... Re start your pump make sure you have pressure generator will run .......problem solved!
  • Yep, that is the issue. Bad gas and/or carb is gummed up. Sea Foam might clean it up. Good luck!!!

In my Weekend Warrior, it will run until the tank is totally empty. Over Thanksgiving last year, I ran it past E for another 6 hours and it was still running.

How long has it been since the genny was ran? If you leave these things sitting for months at a time, your carb will gum up.

Think thats the issue...I'm sure ive run the genset down to empty in the past. I usually hve the trailer out in March but went on a cruise instead and pretty much neglected the trailer. I pumped out some gas of the fuel station and it came out looking rusty...then went to clear again. Going with new gas, filters and run some Sea foam thru it. Hopefully that solves it.

HAHAHAHAH...no kidding. He must have been dormant for a few minutes and needed to comment on something, just itching to give his .02. Boy do I feel lucky to be the recipient of that GREAT info.
  • You said its flashing a code, can you decifer the blinking code?
  • When it happened to me I had low fuel pressure and got a new fuel pump replaced under my onan warranty.

  • get a container of clean gas (1 gallon or so), and run a fuel line hose from the container to the carburetor. Start the genset. If it runs longer than the 5 minutes it did before, either (a) you've got a plugged filter in the fuel line, or (b) the gas tank vent line is clogged or kinked.

Try this: run the genset.... immediately after it stops running, unscrew the cap for the gas tank. If you hear air rushing in, the vent is the culprit.

    I'd change the filter anyways.....
