Fuel station pump noises

I thought I'd ask since its been bugging me for some time now.

My toy hauler has a fuel station (as so do many), but when I turn it on and when the fuel handle isn't on/open then the fuel pump sounds like its kinda straining. It pumps great but clearly drops pump rpm's if I dont open the handle to fill something. When I am filling something it sounds much more relieved and happy.....until I let go of the fill handle and then the pump rpm's drop and it sounds like its running under considerable pressure. Is this normal for these 12v fuel pumps? Thank you.

  • I use a pump very similar to my toyhaulers filling station on the truck's auxiliary fuel tank. They both sound like they are under load when you shut off the flow, open the handle and all is good.

I'd say yours sounds pretty normal.
  • I don't know IF they have 'recirc/bypass' on them so they don't dead-head??

If they do......it may not be opening.

IF they don't, pump is dead-heading when you aren't using nozzle and the sound will change due to the lack of flow.
