If you are detecting a faint propane smell outside at furnace area then 2 things come to mind.
A leak at propane line fitting on gas valve
OR
Furnace gas valve is leaking thru
Now you stated that 'Indicator turned from GREEN to BLACK' after valving out propane BUT you also stated that you 'purged it by turning on stove'
Turning on stove with propane valved out would deplete all propane in lines.
Propane pressure on system is on 0.4 psi...........you can blow harder than that.
BUT the mercaptan additive STINKS so you can notice leaks.
With propane valved in.....
Remove furnace access panel and with a long BBQ lighter see if you get any fluttering flame at burner. If you do.....gas valve is leaking thru
Otherwise.......soapy solution sprayed on gas line fittings looking for bubbles.
If leak at fittings...redo using YELLOW Teflon tape (for gas)
