Not true and I wouldn't lump all salesmen into one category. Some have integrity. On my last rig I was asking about weights to my salesman. I told I'd be back the next day with my wife. When I came the next day he had done his homework. He showed me my trucks tow rating, worst case pin weight, and showed me I'd be 500 lb over total towing capacity if I loaded to trailer GVWR. He said the decision was up to me and talked about the trailer with no sales pressure.
Your story is NOT common. And yes there are enough bad ones to lump them all in the same category. Do your own homework rather than relying on someone with other motives ($$$) is always best IMO.
