Like most it comes down to "COST/BENEFIT".
Our combo works just fine for us. We tow about 7,000 to 10,000 miles per year. 80% flats.
No argument that a 1 ton, dually, diesel makes for the ideal towing vehicles, but in our case the price tag outweighs the benefits for what we would use it for. This is our retirement units and have no plans to upgrade any time soon.
To each his own, but to the original post question... a properly equipped gas would work.
PS: we purchased our 5th wheel first, them factory ordered our tow vehicle to our own spec's with the assistance of a knowledgeable truck salesman who specialized in quoting tenders for cities and townships.
TIP: we purchased in the winter, so the 8 week wait to have the truck built was not as painful as it could have been. Took delivery in the spring just in time for the camping season.
