Gas fumes?

I am considering buying a toy hauler.

One serious concern I have is that the mattress in the cargo area that I will actually be sleeping on will smell like gas because as I drive the gas in the toys sloshing around will send gas fumes out of the gas tank vents into the air and into the materials of the mattress. It would smell for the same reason that a person's clothes smell after being near a campfire or after being near a person that smokes cigarettes.

Does this actually happen?
  • Not on mine. As long as there are no leaks on the toys, you will be fine.
  • I would think as long as gas doesn't spill and remain in the area it wouldn't be a problem.
  • question......you park your car in the closed garage.....does ANYTHING smell of gas?????? Others are right...no leaks, no smell.
  • I think the fumes from driving the machines up the ramp and into the area will. My garage has a distinctive smell especially when closed most of the time.

  • Everyone is correct, it does not smell. But for the cheep seats. When I bought my first toyhauler in 07, one of my dirt bikes fell over on the drive. I would say at least a gallon of fuel spilled out. It smelt pretty bad. We wiped it up left it open for about 2 hours while we set up camp. That night and for the rest of the time I owned that rig I never smelt fuel again.
  • Not a problem by the time you open up the big back doors get you trailer all set up no Smell's at all. My wife was all worried about this when the bikes are loaded you smell the tires more then fuel.

Yup, I only smell tires. I keep a quad and a RZR in mine full time with an MX bike when traveling. Never smell gas but I have had to change out the 1 way valves in the tank vent line for the MX bike and the quad before. This prevents any fumes from coming out and is much better than just an open vent line. I am very sensitive to smell and have a bird that travels with me so it's something I pay attention to. Even if I bought a new trailer today (I wish) it would have an open garage format.
  • Never happened with mine. I had a 2003 Desert Fox Toy hauler, used it for 7 seasons.
