Generator and shore cord

I going to buy a generator for the 5th wheel. Initially I will buy one (Honda 2000) then another one and pair them. Hopefully two of them will run at least one of the air conditioners.

What shore cord are you using that works with the 5th wheel and plugs into the generator. Are you just putting an adapter on the 50amp plug that plugs into the generator? My current shore cord is bulky and has the 50amp plug on the end.

  • Another thing to be aware of. The Honda (and Yamaha) 2000-series inverter generators have floating neutrals - neutral and ground are NOT bonded at the generator. If you have a power protection system, chances are that it will error out and shut off the incoming power to the RV as it's looking for continuity between neutral and ground. If this happens, your choices are to either shut the power protection system off when on generator power or to use a neutral-to-ground bonding plug plugged into one of the generator's 15A outlets.

  • Regardless of the cord, you should remember the single 2000W generator will only run a single A/C unit at a time, and will probably also not run either a microwave or an electric water heater and the same time as the A/C. I've been using the paired Honda generators to run my A/C for many years. I tried having an inverter system installed for the whole trailer, but it was cost-prohibitive if not from the factory.
  • t, I started out in the direction you are going. A couple of 200i"s buying one at a time. Difference is i run Champs.

Anyhow, after working with that "good" idea for a while, I always wonder why i did not get one that would do it all.

I know i did not address your post, but thought I would let you know my thoughts on doubling the genny maintenance and lash up.

    Hi,

Consider moving to a large hybrid inverter. That way you may not need a 2nd generator to have reliable starting on the air conditioners.

Please explain how the inverter power would be synchronized with the generator in order to provide a single source of clean power to the RV. Is there a cord or a wire that would connect the 2?
  • AS for cords, just go to a camping world or wherever and just do a combination that fits your needs. I do an adaptor, 30 cord and an extension (15amp)one when I want some quiet so I move the generator as far from the living room as possible.

  • Depends on what genset you get. The Honda has a three wire twist lock. Camco makes an adapter that goes from the three wire twist lock to a fifty amp RV shore power cable. part number should be 55412
This adapter did not work very good as the vibration caused it to fall out. The twist in the cable was not correct to keep it tight.Adapter
