Going Through Atlanta

We are going to be going through Atlanta the second week of January. We won't be pulling the 5er this trip, but I figured there are a lot of people on here that travel through there.

I have two choices as to when to do it. We will be leaving Ohio Monday the 11th. If we stop just short of Atlanta for the night, we would be going through the next morning around 10:00. Or if we go through Atlanta on Monday, and stop for the night past, we would be going through around 8:00 Monday evening. I'm sure it will be bad either time, but is one better than the other? I'm also assuming we should take the 285 outer belt too.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Mark

I always try and go until I'm on the other side of a large city before stopping. I always go straight through and try for non rush hour, even stopping and eating as opposed to being stopped because of rush hour traffic. I use the HOV lane.
Next week I'll be going through around 9PM and will get past where I-675 comes in as it can be slow going in that area too.
  • Use the HOV lane as long as there are at least two of you in the vehicle. Legally you can even use it while towing with two or more people. Just watch the signs since there are a couple "left turn exits".
  • Evening hours after 7:30'ish will most likely be a less congested time than mid-morning, even though 10am is after rush-hour, still a lot traffic moves around Atlanta daily.

Evening, you also can stay on 75 South right through town (Most likely will be flowing), saves a little mileage, more scenic, less Semi-Truck traffic.

When approaching Atlanta tune into a AM station (640am), they give Atlanta traffic, almost every 15 minutes, or at least on the hour and 1/2 hour breaks.

  • Times you indicate are lesser traffic times. Also say go straight thru and use the middle lanes. There are alot of right hand lanes that turn into off ramps.
  • Either time should probably be ok and I agree about going through staying on 75 and not taking any bypass. We go through twice a year and usually stay right around 55-60mph the whole way when we go through about 10:00am.
We also avoid the two right lanes.

  • Don't take 285, just go straight through. It will be a hit or miss on traffic just depends on the accidents. There was some construction on 85S two weeks ago but it was only a minor slow down. Stay in the middle lanes and you'll do okay.
