Harley on a 5er

I have been trying to evaluate the best way to transport a Harley on a 36' DRV or NH. It is hard to get a good surefire way by reading the forums, talking with the dealers, and the suppliers of lifts, trailers etc. From what I can gather and looking at many options, it appears the single swivel wheel trailer may be the way to go. Would greatly appreciate it if I can hear from some of you that actually have done it or are doing it. I want to stay away from a triple axle trailer so please keep this in mind. Thanks much.

  • Why not just add a second trailer behind the 5th wheel? Make sure it's legal in the area you travel in of course but that's probably a better option than the drag along one wheel system. If the law won't allow a second trailer it's not going to allow the one wheel system either.
  • Nuwa/Hitchhiker advertised this one on their web site some years back.

I am not a motorcycle person, but noticed it since I do own a Hitchhiker fifth wheel.

Sounds like the single wheel version you were writing about.

  • Both DRV and NH have adult type Toy haulers in their line ups!!

  • I towed a Smart Trailer for a few years and it worked well. With the amount of weight you'll be carrying you might want to look at the double wheel units. We towed behind a 34' Big Sky and had no issues except we had to keep an eye on the hitch balls because the constant motion would tend to loosen them up. The trailer performed admirably and was extremely well thought out, and built to a high standard.

Be aware that some states may take exception to your set-up. :) We used it in several states that don't allow double towing but were never stopped. We towed in North Carolina and Virginia with no issues. YMMV.

One of the things to be aware of is the increased tail swing because of the added length behind the axles. It never gave us any problems but you need to be aware of it. We loaded our bikes sideways because our trailer was only 6 feet from the end of the 5er to the end of the trailer. That requires very secure tie downs because of the motion.

We went to a toyhauler because we finally found one that didn't have a separate garage and didn't look like something that could be hosed out when the weekend was over.

    Good luck.
  • I saw a Harley on the back of 5er one time. When I talked to the owner it was a major welding project. Like building a frame within the frame. But it did look good. I remember he did have to make sure the tanks were full when towing so that it didn't handle badly. An Idaho tote might be the only reasonable solution.
  • Have you actually talked to New Horizons? Lots have MH's have lifts and the tag axles ones can handle the weight better. You what a 5th wheel with a lift, however rule out a three axle model? With two 8K axles that may be tight. Why not have NH build a side door MC garage/shop in the last 5 or 6 feet of a 42-44 footer. There have been a couple mid grade trailers that I have seen in Arizona with this feature. Chris
