Sure sounds like a pick up issue. I might try holding fuel hose up high and backfill with gas to prime system. Might help if it's just a prime issue ?
P.S. for reference, when my pump stoped spinning gears were swollen width wise to .906 I sanded down to .899 width and it seems to be working fine. Ordered a new gear set to keep in hauler. They mic'ed out at .901
