Hauling a smart car in toy hauler fifth wheel

A smart car would easily fit in my 10' garage. The ramp and garage are both rated for 3,000 pounds so that's not an issue. I weighed my trailer with some water and almost equipped for a trip and it was 2,500 pounds under gross weight. With that it seems the smart car's 2,000 pound weight wouldn't be an issue. Each tie-down is rated for 2,500 pounds so strapping the thing down also wouldn't be an issue. I guess if I ever gave up my Harley the smart car could be an option.

I have put a Jeep Cherokee in mine, but it was built for that purpose. The ramp is very heavy and the trailer frame rather thick plus triple axle. I would think the break over angle would enjoy too much for a Smart Car.A smart car weighs nearly a ton, that's a lot for most toy hauler. The other consideration is the length of the garage, mine is just under 15' long but a lot was sacrificed for that on a 31' trailer, like a dinette and kitchen space.

It seems most trailers were designed to be near their limits weight wise. I wouldn't think you could put much in the way of gear or any water if you did try it. Also need to look at the tow rig, make sure it can handle the extra weight. If everything adds up I would want to make sure the engine if the smart car is over or very near the axles of the trailer.

You can but need to take these factors in consideration:

1. Does the TH have sufficient capacity for your car and all your gear
2. Is the loading ramp rated for your car weight
3. Beyond physical dimensions of fitting in the garage, can you get in and out of the car when it is inside
4. Are the stock tie downs sufficiently rated to hold down your car
5. Is the ramp approach and break over angle mild enough to clear your car

You may be better off looking at toy haulers based off enclosed car carriers. They have a low load floor and better payload capacity. InTech and Feather Lite have nice interiors in their living quarters and also offer slides verses the more utilitarian race trailers you may have seen. Look at the living quarters offered in some horse trailers to see the interior possibilities.
