Having to be towed with 5ver. Has it happened to you?

I had a close call a couple of weeks ago. My truck lost power and I thought I was going to be stranded. Luckily I was handy enough to do an on road repair and limp home. We were in the puckerbrush of Vermont so it would not have been good. It might be worse if it happened on a busy road or interstate. I don't like to be on the roadside with cars passing by at 70 MPH.
It got me thinking though. How would the truck and trailer combination be towed? The driveshaft would have to be removed and I assume it would be on a wheel lift type tow truck. Typically will the towing company drop the trailer off in one spot and the truck at a repair shop or would they both go to the same place? I have a dog along most of the time too. To those of you who have had this happen how was the experience? Did you have Coachnet or Good Sam? If the repairs took a long time did you stay with the trailer at the shop or find someone to move the trailer for you?

  • When my, still under warranty, F250 6.0L imploded, Ford sent a flatbed for the truck and fifth wheel equipped truck for the RV. They took the truck to a dealer and the RV to the campground of my choice.
  • Had a cam sensor go bad and strand me on the side of I-40 outside of OKC 3 yrs ago. Tow company loaded my truck up on the bed of his tow truck and hooked my 5er to a dually with a 5th wheel hitch. DW rode with the tow truck operator as he took the truck to the local dealer. I rode with the other driver as he towed the 5er to the nearest KOA, waited while I leveled and connected electric, then took me to that dealer.
Of course this was late Thursday afternoon, service department was busy, and they would not be open on Saturday. And we supposed to have our granddaughters home on Monday. But service manager, upon hearing our plight, rushed the truck thru, had it ready the next afternoon. Warranty paid for repairs and rent car so we were not inconvenienced to much.
  • Most tow your truck with the fiver attached. The drive shaft will not be removed but unhooked. Once you get to the repair facility you may be responsible for getting your fiver towed to a campground to await repair of the truck.

Some have had a commercial-sized lowboy show up and load the entire rig on it.

I had that issue just South of Pueblo, Colorado last year and the tow company brought a dually to pull the fifth wheel and a flatbed for my truck. Took trailer to nearest KOA and the truck to nearest dealer in Pueblo.

That's what I would hope for. Did you have roadside insurance or did you bear the expense on your own?

I have Xtra Ride extended service and towing and this how they would do it.
