Go with the 14' door. My shop has 16' walls with a 14' door and as one stated earlier, adding a taller door later is a major pain in the a*s and $$$$.

The Interstate Highway system bridges will all clear a 13'6" truck or trailer. All trailers, toyhaulers or comercial, are no higher than that. Secondary roads may be quite a bit lower especialy RR underpasses because the RR was here before any trucks.

I agree. Building as big as you can afford has multiple benefits... potential buyers if you sell the property will be able to fit whatever they own, and YOU will be able to fit whatever you buy in.

I would LOVE to be able to purchase a property with building on it that I can actually use as-is!

I have looked at a few house with sheds and most are 12 tall. I would likely spend more raising the roof 4 ' than tearing it down and building new.

Go wide too. Mine are 16' x 14' if you go 14' high it will clear any fifth wheel height you buy. Over the road tractor trailers could back through a 14' tall door, they are typically 13'6"

Your RV now is a travel trailer, which is why you only need 12 feet.

If you ever decide to go to a fifth wheel, it is very easy to go over 12' in just about any fifth wheel that offers a full height bedroom over the hitch, which is most, if not all, fifth wheels these days. I don't think they even make rv fifth wheels anymore with less than 6' front bedroom cieling height (except for living quarters horse trailers, but those are mostly goosenecks)....

As an alternative, if cost of building the garage is an issue, you could buy a pre-made 12'w x 16'h x 30-40'l metal awning building. They are far less expensive than building an actual garage. The roof sheet metal us usually wrapped around the corners and goes part way down the sides. It can go all the way to the floor if you want it to, for not much more money. The rear end can be enclosed too, for not much money. Then build a pair of swinging doors for the front and you have your RV covered and safe, for a lot less than constructing an actual garage. The awnings can sit on dirt, or asphault, or a concrete slab, your choice. Obviously, concrete is the most expensive choice.

As my existing shed has a 13' door and our new toyhauler is 13'6....I now need to spend 8K to enlarge to door to 13'8 (due to width of door that is my max) talk about sucking.....but when I bulit mine in '94 a rig this tall was unheard of. Oh well, its only money :) My advice is build it big enough now, and as leagal max HT is 13'6 your 14' door should be perfect as you move forward.

I would go with the 14' door, even if you only need 12' now. All you are adding is 2' of sidewall. You never know what you might buy in the future. If you plan on doing ANY work on the roof while in the shed, you should consider 16' rafters. Door could be 14 or 16'. That will give you enough head room to walk among the rafters while working on the roof.

Can you open the 12' opening to 14' without to much stress to the existing header? What kind of garage do you have now? Metal sheet siding or something else? How tall are your current walls? If your walls are at least 16' you should be able to rebuild the door opening.
