Help with Gray Water Tank Fitting

OK let me start off by saying I have been lurking for a while but finally had a reason to post.

One of my gray water tanks had the pipe break off in the fitting at the tank. I'll spare you the story on this whole thing. It appears that the black ABS that is broken in there is a threaded male. It also appears that the threaded part was glued in from the factory. I have about 6-8" between the bottom of the floor and the fitting at the tank. I have tried to cut the broken part on opposite sides put it appears it still will not come out. IS there a way to add a new fitting to the tank next to this one and plumb it in? I can get this one plugged I am sure. Your help is greatly appreciated.
  • Fernco is a good suggestion. You can get one that is 2"x 1 1/2". the 2" end will possibly fit over the outlet of the tank and tighten enough that it will not leak. Then your existing 1 1/2" pipe will fit the other end.
  • Try cutting several places without cutting too far into the threads. The more cuts you make the easier it will come apart. You can use a hacksaw blade to make the cuts. Just make sure you have cut the whole length of the fitting. The male threaded section is not as thick as the rest of the pipe. Then use pliers to twist a section causing it to pull away. You are right, ABS glues much more like melting the pieces together. I was a plumber when ABS was the only drain pipe we used. You can get it apart, just keep cutting smaller section. Once you get a piece to twist enough it will pull apart. Then you can get the rest out. Just keep working at it and Good Luck.
  • If you have about 1.5 inch stub you could use a coupling. I am guessing it is 1.5 inch pipe. A rubber coupling with hose clamps would/could be the easiest. Should be able to find at hardware store.
    Something like this:
