Check out the BTU of the fireplace and then go to Lowes, WalMart, Home Depot, etc. and you can find a small ceramic electric heater with the same BTU's for probably $25-35. Need heat, plug it in turn on. Don't need heat, store it away and you still have all the storage area that you would lose if you install a fireplace.
Not to mention an extra $600 in your pocket.
