Those rounded basketball shaped older tech ST tires were part of their problem. Old ST tire adds from Goodyear and Carlisle pointed this out. The theory was it gave the trailer a softer ride because of the very harsh ride from the trailers short leaf spring lengths. Rounded profile also leaves the sidewall hanging way out past the wheel causing sidewall cuts and bruising.
Thankfully the newer gen ST class tires have gone away from the rounded sidewall profile.
