Hitch release came off in my hand

Boy when it rains it pours. First my shackles break, and now this:

The left foreground shows the release bar which came off the hitch in my hand. I've had occasional problems releasing the jaws, but this time she just gave out.

I pulled the hitch pins and with the help of a sledgehammer and my front jacks was able to do this:

Fortunately I didn't overstress the jacks or the king pin. So now I guess I'll have to drill the stub, screw in something to grab onto and pull. Should open real easy. Boy, when you hit 10 years things really start to fall apart!!

You are very lucky as we were on an improper hitch exchange from the 2001 to the 2005. The part showing hanging on the pin did not have the 2 pins installed and we towed since 05 and it came off 2 trips south as we were getting ready to leave the rv park.
    Happy for ya.

  • No air ride hitch, but air on the truck.

Over the years what happened is occasionally the jaws wouldn't release, and I'd have to pull pretty hard on it - many times. And instead of pulling straight I probably did not. That, plus age 10.
  • Looks to me that vibration cause the metal to fail. I see a toter bed in the picture. What is the TV? Is the TV riding so stiff that the release handle was vibrating to death! Do you have an air ride hitch setup on the TV???

So you have a F450 with air ride suspension?

Got a tire(s) out of balance?

Consider, checking if see it there is a rebuild kit for you hitch.
If that is a rebuildable part....
They were available for the 18 wheeler I used to drive.

eTrailer has parts, handle, new spring and Jaws about $100. I tear mine down about once every two years and inspect, clean and lube.

Maybe you could search the forums for solutions? I'm sorry, but that was low hanging fruit. :)
