Oh I think we all understand it and we pick what we are comfortable with regarding risk. The only absolute in safe is to travel at 0, which is where some of the paranoids should probably stay.
I don't think you understand it at all, you just choose to ignore it. Physics doesn't care about your comfort zone, it just is. Unfortunately the guy you hit because you couldn't stop or avoid doesn't get a say in the matter.
