With mine there is about 1" of clearance but I still don't leave it down.
I drop the gate, back in till the hitch has cleared the tailgate, go back hook up my electrical and close the gate, then I use my trailer brakes when I finish backing in. after that I check to see I am locked and then I'm off. don't get mad or anything.
For the price of a 5th wheel tail gate up here I will gladly keep doing this.
Besides, they look bad and don't have my back up camera in them
