If you boondock a lot, a built in generator makes a lot of sense but if it's just a few times per year or you don't run the air/con, it makes far less sense.
We only boondock occasionally so the portable yamaha in the truck bed does just fine.
Yes, it's theoretically possible to build a solar system that will run the air/con but you can buy, maintain and fuel a generator for a few decades for less cost.
