- joebedfordNomad IIIYou can burn through a propane 30 pounder in 12 hours.
- lee_worsdellExplorerI don't get some people, you buy a nice fver but want to sit some where in the dark. No ac no nothing should bought a tent. And solar ya to run a few things just seen a comment about 15g to run ac. you got to be kidding me
- tinner12002ExplorerI like my built in 5500, wouldn't have it any other way. I do think its a shame that they don't offer a gas powered gen in a 5th wheel like they do in a toy hauler instead of an LP powered gen. Granted an LP runs cleaner but they are also LP gas hogs.

As we primarily boondock, when in hot areas....obviously the geni is needed. If stopping for only one night, a built-in geni is very practical, as you’re not having to set up geni ( in our case... 2 x 2000’s) and then put away the next morning. Of course having a 3000+ in the truck bed alleviates much of the geni handling.
That said, we had a propane fueled built-in in a previous unit....never again. Propane consumption was outrageous! If I had the option of a gasoline fueled “on-board geni....then yes!
On our previous “on-board” geni... noise, vibration, and fumes, were a non-issue. Only “feeding it”!
Mine is gas fed. I have a battery operated fuel pump that makes transferring gas even easier. It operates on 2 AA batteries and works great. - Blanco1ExplorerThats my next question to follow up with %th wheel dealers is about fuel options for the Geni.
Yet Jayco runs 3 big propane tanks.
I for the geni & 2 for the RV, So I would Imagine its not a big issue unless Boondocking for a long time & constantly running the Geni?
Like maybe in the heat of summer? - Blanco1Explorer

This is exactly why I purchased a on-board Onan generator. I currently have two Collies, I can start the generator and leave the Collies in the camper when I go into the store or restaurant. If I want to stop for a nap or lunch I can fire up the Onan and be comfortable and warm up leftovers in the microwave. I actually exercise the generator more then I use it. When I do need it it's there. For me a built-in generator is best bang for buck although not the cheapest route.
Sounds to me that we have a similar mind set. - If I want air conditioning 24/7 I am looking for hookups.
I did have a portable generator and I was loathe to run it.
Otherwise solar keeps the battery charged. Inverter runs the microwave and the rest runs on propane. We do avoid being off-grid in the desert during Summer.
So yes we are happy 12 years running. - laknoxNomad

I have a gen for boondocking BUT it is NOT installed in 5th wheel
My 4kw gen is in forward area of my long bed truck in its own enclosed gen box that has its own fuel tank and is insulated. Plus air intake and exhaust are designed to provide sufficient cooling air, air for combustion and quiet exhaust
Old-Biscuit, do you have some pics of the generator setup in your truck bed? I’m curious to see what it looks like.

OB, FWIW, I'm getting a malware alert from Avast on mountainmaster's web site every time your link comes up. Just sayin'...

Your trying to tell me while Boondocking I can run my A/C & microwave on solorpowered charged batteries?
Depends. Check out my cousin's DIY build at "Beginning from this morning". Basically, taking a Nissan Leaf battery and charging it with 3500+ watts of solar on top of a '64 Greyhound bus. :-) They're running the entire coach on electricity, including the induction cook top and the A/C.

Most toyhaulers have gasoline tank and generators not Diesel. Most toys are gasoline powered. Motorhomes that run on Diesel usually have a Diesel generator.
Since most toy haulers and fivers seem to have the Onan 5000 in the front compartment, can the Onan be had in diesel? Since toy haulers have 40-60 gal of diesel on board for the toys, it would seem to be the ideal set up as compared to the propane sucking version of the Onan.
