How much trouble to convert 30 amp to 50 amp?

I have my Eagle 5th wheel and I''m wanting change from 30 amp service to a 50 amp service. I know I need the inverter, cord, and attachments but not sure if I need a new breaker panel and what ever else I may need. We love the unit and owned it since 05 and has been a great trailer but we also take good care of it. I think I can do this myself or with a friend so I can save some money. Who has done this and is it worth it on a 11 year old 5th whee?

  • Thanks for the replies, but I''m considering adding a 2nd AC, but I can't run the AC, WH, without causing the plug to overheat and or trip the breaker. I understand the loads on a 30 amp RV are very tight and I would like to have the flexabllity.
  • The only hard part is pulling new romex from the entrance to the new breaker panel.
If you have access then it will be a slam dunk.

Hmm. Maybe a typo on your part but why would you need an inverter to go to 50 amp service. Maybe I'm not understanding what you are trying to achieve. Are you trying to add an inverter to the system?

Why not trade the 2005 in on a much newer unit that already is 50amp? Maybe 2013 or newer.

Wow, that just increased the cost!!

Well my 32' Copper Canyon came from the factory with a 50 amp service.

I don't think the replacement as a project would would be all that hard, it would be a be a bit costly.
New 50 amp shore cable $$$$
New 50 amp entrance receptacle $$$
New 50 amp entrance cable to panel $
New 50 amp distribution panel $$

You would only need a new converter if adding many 12 volt devices to increasing the load on the converter.

If a 50 amp shore connection is available you do gain a lot of amperage capacity.

I thought about doing it to my 05 as well when I had it. But bought a new one. if you decide to do it, I have a brand new 50amp panel, for sale. I think its a parallax model.

  • Are you thinking of adding additional significant electrical loads to the RV like a second A/C unit? If not why do you really need 50A service?
  • From what you say leads me to believe you may be biting off more than you can chew. First question is why do you want to do this. The one thing you need most of all is a new circuit breaker panel. The old converter is not needed to be replaced unless you just want a new one with a better charging control. Please be careful!
