Hi and welcome to the forum. Yea, it can certainly be confusing until you figure out what is limiting for the various vehicles being used for the tow duty. As a general rule of thumb pulling TT and FWs all single wheel vehicles will be limited by payload long before you reach manufacturer tow ratings. Dually's are generally limited by GCWR if you choose use that
With the exception of the current 2013 line of heavy duty trucks a good set of rules of thumb for FW towing pretty much comes out to be:
- 1/2 Ton properly equiped 8,000#. Payload/Axle limited. Only a limited number of 1/2 tons can do this. Generally need to be special ordered to get the right equipment and there are only a limited number of FWs this lite.
- 3/4 Ton gas generally stay below 10,000#. Power limited
- 3/4 Ton Diesel 12k#. Payload/Axle limited
- 1 Ton SRW Diesel 14k#. Payload/Axle limited
- 1 Ton DRW Diesel 18k# to 20k#. Payload/Axle limited
All wieghts of FW above are GVWR of the FW, IT IS NOT DRY/EMPTY Wieght.
Others will other opinions but if you do the payload/axle math this range is what you will come up with everytime.
