Ideas on manual lift queen bed..

Hey everybody it's been a while since I have posted on here. I did a conversion of a 28' Pace car trailer into a camper/car hauler. I will post some photos later if anybody wants to see it. Anyway I need to pic some brains on how to install a queen bed in the back of the trailer that will lift to the roof and be able for one man to bring down low enough for my wife to be comfortable in it. I know happijac systems are out there but too darn expensive for me. Any ideas or pics would really appreciated. Joe

  • I used the same shocks and lowered it about 6-8"
I don't think I have pictures though. If you can find a toy hauler sitting on a lot with a Happijac go in and take measurements. That's how I started.
  • Thanks for the pictures. Do you think that a dealer would have longer shocks ? I like the idea but I need to get it lower to the floor.
  • This is the bed I built in my 24' car hauler conversion which I have since sold. The rear of the bed rides in uni-strut and the front rests on aluminum brackets when in the stored and also when in the down position. My first design as you can see used four gas struts as my frame was heavy. After a couple of years I got my hands on an extra bed that came out of the back of my buddies Voltage. It was very light and I only used 2 gas struts. I also lowered the down position so it was easier to get in and out of as well being able to sit up in bed.
Mcmaster Carr has a great selection of gas struts based on length and pressure. If you can find a discarded bed from the back of someones toy hauler would be the easiest build. If not if I had to do it over again I would definitely use aluminum for my frame and route out nylotron blocking for the tracks at the rear of the trailer.
