I have read along on this and a couple of thoughts come to mind. First, the photo with the rig hooked up looks like the trailer is set back in the bed. And you indicated that you can get between the lowered tailgate and the trailer. I have a long bed Ford also and while the tailgate does clear the front of the trailer when down I cannot squeeze between them. These points indicate to me that the 5th wheel hitch is mounted behind the rear axle, not 2-3" ahead as it should be. Maybe it does need to be moved ahead as others have said.
