I have a long bed Ford also and while the tailgate does clear the front of the trailer when down I cannot squeeze between them. These points indicate to me that the 5th wheel hitch is mounted behind the rear axle, not 2-3" ahead as it should be. Maybe it does need to be moved ahead as others have said.
I agree I have the same truck and like you I can put the tailgate down but can't get between it and the trailer,I think the hitch needs move up over the axles.
