I have an 02 D'max like yours; 4x4. I can NOT hit my square front FW when going forward, at full lock either way. All will hit going backwarks. A 2wd may turn shorter, but I don't know. I have a standard Companion hitch.

My son has a 6 1/2' bed '02 DMax/A 4wd crew cab chevy. He's had a 31' and a 33' 5er and non even come close to the cab. His current 5er has the notched/rounded corners made for a short bed truck.
There is no generic answer to the OP question as it depends on several things.
The GM 6 1/2' bed has a longer dimension from the back of the cab to the trucks rear axle. I've seen more than one GM owner say they wish they hadn't spent the money on the expensive SuperGlide hitch as their trailer still had 4" clearance.
Bottom line is we can't say for sure the OP will need one or he will not need one. Thats for him to do the leg work on yes or no.
My short bed Dodge needs a slider. But that doesn't mean all short bed Dodge trucks will.
