I think you need to make your own plans for the future and make up your own mind on whether you need a 3500 or not.
i tow with a 250 2 WD gasser and that is all I will ever need for the rest of my days.
Any of the late model gassers will pull that trailer just fine.
however the cummins is a fine engine and if it is diesel that you want it will serve you well and most important you will be happy with your wheels.
