Is this safe?

You didn't say if this a trailer or 5ver. If a 5ver, I can tell you the pin weight will wind up being more than stated on he sticker when your loaded. While ours is much bigger than what your looking at, the stated pin weight is 3600 lbs and we weigh in when loaded at 4200 lbs, so you might allow a little more in your calculation.

I guess I assumed they don't make WDH for 5th wheel?

Your basing hitch weight on the advertised dry weight. Calculate it at trailers GVWR and try again. Personally it's something I would not attempt or recomend

Welcome to the forums... plenty of "weight police" on here and based on your answer above, which I liked, you might not be driven off this forum. Unlike most 8-10 percent tongue weight is enough for me so yes I would try it with what you have. That said, that's a lot of trailer for your SuperCrew... the tail may wag the dog when being passed by a 18 wheeler. The other problem is trailers have a way of growing over time.

If you have room to move your 1000 lbs around you can adjust your tongue weight.

I was basing hitch weight on 12% of the estimated loaded trailer weight.

My thought would be if you're worried enough to have the wife and kids drive in a separate vehicle to save a couple hundred pounds, you're too close to the edge.

I am asking if a couple hundred pounds is the difference between safe and not safe.

Are you saying that being within a couple hundred pounds of payload capacity is unsafe? If so, what percent of the payload capacity should I consider safe?

I was assuming that ford bases their payload capacity on what they feel is safe for the vehicle. It sounds like I shouldn't assume the numbers Ford uses are considered safe? Is this correct?

I personally wouldn't do it because I've towed with a half ton before, granted by 2013, half tons were more Stout than the 2000s. And having your family ride in a different vehicle isn't going to change things. I'll explain.

My 3/4 ton is 7,700 pounds with everything in it, 9,200 GVW. With 2000 pounds of rock in the bed, it squats pretty good, I do that to drive a few miles home, no way would I want to do that on the freeway. When we all get out of the pickup, it doesn't change the squat in the rear even tho we are now at the 9,200 pounds. It's the same on your trailer, you are putting a strain on the very rear of the pickup way behind the rear wheels. You can try it, but I have a feeling you'll be disappointed in how it drives. The engine and tranny will perform great, plenty of power. But you'll feel every bump and dip in the road. If you are just doing a few miles down the road, who cares, it'll be fine. But any trip if any distance, you'll be left tired at the end of the trip. Whereas if you just got a 3/4 ton, you set it and forget it. The excess capacity is so worth it. I have never been "you forget it's back there", I don't get it when people say that. But the ride is so much more comfortable in a rig that's built for the job.

That being said, everyone is different and your pickup is technically capable.

Don't you feel every crack in the road with a 3/4 ton when you're not towing?

Doesn't a WDH transfer the weight from the rear axle of the truck to the front axle of the truck and also to the rear of the trailer? Is X weight distributed evenly via a WDH the same as X weight dead over the rear axle?
