Jayco, Arctic Fox, Grand Design

Ugh...
Why oh Why is making a choice so hard.
Wife and I went looking today....

Jayco seem nice but local dealer doesn't have a lot of inventory but it seems to be missing options I think I want... hydraulic self leveling.

Grand Design are cool, the higher end designed has LED, hydraulic leveling, small LP tanks hmmm.. but WOW they want top $$$ and on a new trailer. The entry level ones aren't bad looking but the boondocking options of the standard light bulbs just kill me.

Artic Fox The dealer has stock but they are the smallest dealer around. I like that they are local "Live in WA" they seem nice but not so sure. They claim to be the premier 4 season trailer but the R values they claim are a little less then the Grand. and it seemed a little outdated.

Ugh.. open to advice suggestions
  • I've got a Grand Design Solitude and couldn't be more pleased with it. We've had it over a year now, and got over 7000 miles on it. One of the big pluses for me was, I'm 6'3" and have plenty of headroom everywhere. Slides are 7' tall, six point auto leveling is great, led lights, king size bed, big shower...etc.
  • Of the three, Jayco isn't really close.

Grand Design are well appointed, but if you are interested in getting into some rough country Arctic Fox is your choice.

One of the things we love about Arctic Fox (owned the first one for 10 years, and it was used when we bought it) is the quality. They may (and do) lack "glitz". But they are solidly built. They build their own frames, vrs buying Lipperts (see Lippert failures).
The pressure test their rigs to ensure they don't leak. Having an R-99 wall and ceiling does you little choice if the wind blows through gaps in the construction.

One thing to bare in mind about "claimed" R value, some builders are including a new reflective membrane with high "claimed" R values. These are not really borne out and you don't find these claims in say homes, where the R ratings are regulated.

I'm going to guess that your "local Washington" dealer is Sumner RV. They really are a family. A lot of the staff is related by blood, marriage, or something. When we bought they beat another dealers price by a comfortable margin.
  • When we bought our Jayco the local dealer didn't have the model we wanted. They did something for us that really helped, they found the elements of the model we wanted in several other models. We went into a model and they said this is what the bedroom will be, went into another and that one had the bathroom, another had the kitchen. We must have went into 7 or 8 units. After that we went in and ordered what we wanted from the factory. It was a great experience and we got a heck of a deal.

Maybe this could be an option for you.

    Good luck!
  • Just looked at a Arctic Fox 25P this weekend. I was amazed at the quality. We own Jaycos currently and have never had a problem on the last 2 TTs. Jayco also has a 2 year warranty.
Nice thing with Artic Fox is they a built in La Grande OR. right here in the NW.
  • It is pretty easy and not too expensive to change to LED bulbs. We have changed the ones that we use the most for about $20. If you look on the Grand Design owner's forum you will find a post where someone listed the count and model numbers for all the LED bulbs. Bulbs would only cost a hundred bucks or so, shouldn't be a make or break decision.

Our decision was based on floorplan, length, weight, tank capacities and ability to run 16" LT tires. We are very pleased with our choice after about 3000 miles and 50 or so nights.
