I only did it once a long time ago...
and my story is - it was a cold rainy morning and...
Thank goodness I was going slow and had a superslider so the pin dropped onto the slide mechanism and not fully onto the bed sides... just lost a tailgate :)
so THAT is one lesson (and sick feeling) I won't ever forget and if I do nothing else before putting up the tail gate
I LOOK at the jaws around the pin after the handle is pulled closed by the hitching...
I make sure the two silver pawls are around the black pin and
ABOVE the bottom ring of the pin.
