I LOOK at the jaws around the pin after the handle is pulled closed by the hitching...
I make sure the two silver pawls are around the black pin and
ABOVE the bottom ring of the pin.
Our neighbors are truckers. He has a class 8 Volvo pulling flatbeds and she has two 4500 Dodges/GN trailers she run local.
I noticed one of his 48' flatbeds on the ground the other day. He was in a hurry to get hooked as a big storm was rolling in. He backed under the pin with a slam and jumped out to hook air/electric up and took a peak at the hitch. Jumped back in the tractor to pull up to the house. The trailer slide off and onto the ground. He said later he remembers the jaws being closed but the pin flange (ring as you call it) must have been on top of the jaws (hi pinned). He was kicking his butz for not doing a tug test.
