With my B&W all I have to do is watch the handle move back and forth. That way I know the pin is in the jaws. If I'm too high then the handle won't move. Plus I always make sure the king pin is lower than the top of the hitch, that way it forces the pin in lower than the jaws. I always put the emergency brake line thru the handles safety pin. So that gives me two things to account for to be fool proof. I've only had two 5'er hitches (Reese and B&W) both of which have the jaws and not the slide bar. Both hand the same handle action and both have the same similar safety pin attachment. Even doing all that I still get nervous. I still squeeze my butt checks when 1st pulling away even though I can visually see that it's hooked up.
