Yes, I had a cheap Reese on my last truck and it worked like that. It would be easy I think for B&W to incorporate a slight bit of friction? into the handle to hold it open while unhitching yet be overcome when hitching? Having to pin it open when unhitching is the one flaw I see in the design.
Although I don’t have the cheap Reese you are referring to ,mine actually has a lever inside where the kingpin makes contact and releases the handle so it locks shut .
