Keeping 5th Wheel Hitched?

My wife is concerned that it would be harmful if we keep our 5th wheel hitched to our pick up for several days while packing it. We would also be staying hitched at most RV parks overnight while traveling cross country. Is there any reason for her to worry?

  • No worries--good idea to put the front jacks down to prevent sway from side to side--make sure your hitch pull handle has a lock on it, in the closed position. Pranksters have been known to pull the handle out far enough to release the pin from the jaws and what a surprise in the morning when your hitch ends up in the bed of the T.V. as you take off. Lars
  • I leave the umbilical hanging over the tailgate so I do not forget to plug it back in when leaving.

That did not save me from driving down the road with the trailer unplugged. My cord goes over the tailgate anyway and so it does not get my attention to see it over the tail gate.

I hang mine over the drivers side wheel-well so I can see it with the mirrors :)

I do not think it hurts the truck or RV to stay hooked up.

When I overnight in a rest area or truck stop I leave the slides in and will stay hooked up even if the refrigerator is slightly off level. I do not think 8-10 hours of slightly off level makes a difference.

I have occasionally stayed hooked up at RV parks when the site is level enough and I do not expect to stay long but hitching/unhitching is easy, quick, and frees the truck up to go get fuel or shopping, so most of the time even for a short stop I unhook.
  • my routine for getting our 5er ready, got out to the storage lot 1-2 days prior, turn on the fridge, get it home, level it on the street (last on a dead end), turn on the propane (for backup to the electric on the fridge, yes, murphys law happened once), level it front to back with the front jacks down (no rear stablizers used), plug in the power. Putting it on the street is usually done the night before so usually leave it hooked to the truck. No problems to worry about.
  • We do it quite often. My fifth wheel is set to be level when towing but if the rv site is on a slope I can add a board under either the trailer tires or the truck tires to get as close as possible. I drop the landing gear and the stabilizers. I also unplug from the truck because I do not have an isolating relay in the system. I leave the umbilical hanging over the tailgate so I do not forget to plug it back in when leaving.
  • Sitting still with the 5th whl attached is easier on the truck than going down the road hitting the potholes and expansion joints. Having said that, I wouldn't leave it hooked up full time while sitting, but there's no harm with several days.

  • No worries at all...as mentioned maybe lower the landing gear to relieve some of the weight off the TV suspension...also maybe keep as level as possible if you are going to run the fridge....
  • Nope..........

    Truck 'carries' the pin weight.
Stationary is less stressful than the dynamic loading going on while traveling.

Only issue........is 5vr reasonably level when hitched?
RV absorption fridges WILL be damaged when operated off level even for as short of time span as 20 mins.

    THAT can be an issue!
  • I'll be doing the same in August, assuming it is level enough for the absorption refrigerator to be happy.
  • Only thing is it is putting weight on your shocks/springs, but then is it more than going down the fine roads in the USA? Just let your front jacks down to take some of the weight, then the wife will have less to worry her lovely head with and less stress for you both.
