Sounds like you have a Suburban Water Heater...........different set of t-stats for the electric & propane.
The electric t-stat failed and 120V AC power shorted....burnt/melted etc.
Contact Suburban (Airxcel) and get the ball rolling with them. Explain what happened and that you would like to be reimbursed for out of pocket costs for repairs and how to file the claim
