Lake Almanor Trip

Last year was our first trip to Lake Almanor. Our friends have been going the last 4 years on 4th of July and they invited us out again. Last year we stayed at a private CG closer to lake near the west entrance launch ramp Known as Canyon Dam. This year the owner didn’t want to deal with short term campers and filled the CG with long term campers for the season. My buddy said he got a spot over in WestWood Ca which is about 12 miles from the lake. We were pretty excited to hit the road in the new trailer. The drive up to
The lake would be about 10hrs or longer towing at CA speed limit of 55mph, we made our first stop in Santa Cruz RV ranch for one night, the plan was to leave home early so we can spend the day Down at the boardwalk, but we had trailer brake issues so we got A late start and arrived at camp late. Next day we split from rv ranch at 6 am for another long drive up to our destination - Lassen west RV village

The trailer towed great

Love these drives
July 3rd
Finally made it to our destination and man were we greeted by the most friendliest staff ever! These guys brought over the tractor, leveled the site and poured two buckets of grave for us.

Monty and Ron hooking up our camp site - these guys are very accommodating and made sure we were happy with our spot.

July 4th we setup at canyon dam west launch ramp entrance. This part of the lake isn’t to crowded and you can normally get a spot. There is free parking, restrooms and to launch the boat is free.

Launching the boat

This spot is cove that we were at last year, it’s a short walk from the parking lot

I was on the paddle board :)

The next day (July 5th) we setup in the same area but different spot. As you enter at the canyon dam launch area you will see a road on the left about 100 yards in, if you make the sharp left it will lead you on a dirt road, follow it for about 1/4 of a mile and you will be right on the water.

All setup :) this area was all to ourself

July 6th did some fishing - threaded worms on the downtiggers about 35’-45 down is the trick to fishing this lake. We caught 7 salmon and kept 5.

July 7th
East of the rv Park about 5 Miles is Mountian Meadow reservoir - head east on Ca 36, it will be your second left which is a dirt road after the power plant station. If you are a bird watcher this place is for you. Lots of bird life and numerous bald eagles. Me my buddy hit the water and not another soul insight. Definitely bring a paddle vessel to enjoy all the wildlife in this area.

July 8th
My buddy had to pack up and leave, we stayed one more night to make the 40 mile drive to Lassen volcanic National Park. Plus our next destination check in was for July 9th.

Sulphur works - this area is easily accessible and is right off the road
There is boiling water in this area that release sulphur, it’s crazy and awesome!

I couldn’t resist I had to go for a quick paddle in lake emerald :)

We didn’t come prepared to do and serous hiking so
We checked out all the spots that were easy accessible. This place sure made me wish I had a truck camper.

Mt.Lassen

The next day we packed up and headed toward the coast, Lawson’s Landing in Tamales Bay. This CG is mostly dry Camping.

Backed up to the wall, right on the water.

Quick stroll to check out the area. The small pier is very popular for crabbing. My
First time seeing people use snares on a fishing pole to catch crab. South of point conception we are prohibited to use rod and
Reel for crab, we can only use hand or hoop net.

Sandy beaches

They have a field of cattle which was cool.

A nice garden with a picnic table and bbq pit

There was some 2x4s that were screwed in on the other side of the wall - they perfect to
Be to be used as a ladder for the climb up and down the wall.
So I launched the kayak right below. We put the ramp down right on the wall and used it as our deck , it worked out Perfect!

Went out and dropped a net

Sat back and waited to check the net every 30 mins

Red crab is in season and dungeons were out of season

Caught dinner for the night

What a perfect way to end our trip and head home.

Lawsons Landing CG is definitely one of our favorites, we will be coming back that’s for sure!

Call me crazy but I just had to cross the Golden Gate Bridge!

The trailer worked flawlessly and felt much more comfortable with that extra length. Only issue we have is the awning was dry rotted and it was shredded when we got home.
  • Looks like good times! Just a Note: ~ You said: (longer towing at CA speed limit of 55mph) I've been towing in CA for years at 62mph and have never have been stopped and have driving around and by CHP with no issues. But it is safer at 55mph. In other states the towing speed are much higher then CA for sure. But you do get awesome mileage at 55 mph.

Going up the i5 at 55 is loooooooong and boring. The truck likes 62-64mph :)
  • A great lake that is well known. Almanor is a large lake that can get plenty rough. I like to visit in the spring and fall and skip the crowds. I have fished there into November and come home to the boat ramp in a snow storm. It is wonderful timber country and wetter than most places at the same elevation.
  • Looks like a great trip, and it's hard to beat fresh crab like that.

The rough isn’t too bad, plus I can hop on the board a do a little downwinding :).surprogly the canyon dam area doesn’t get too packed, especially for a major holiday such as the 4th, maybe not packed as I’m used to living in SoCal a couple miles from the beaches. If it’s over 70degrees the beaches are jam packed. We really like the area, and can’t wait to get back up there.

backed up right on the Tamales bay pulling up some fresh crab is definitely hard to beat, it was the perfect way to end our trip.
  • Very cool.

Family ties for me. We spent a week at Almanor in a house right on the lake, boats tied to our own dock, beautiful lake.

Now the kicker. My extended family are The Lawsons. They own the landing you stayed at. Have not seen a pic of the store in ages. The spot you camped in used to be permanent trailers, another cousin had one there. Did you see the sand dunes where you pulled in? My first dune buggy ride was on those dunes with a cousin in a homemade buggy, flathead power and all!

Great report. How did the new trailer work out?

That’s so Awesome! It’s a great place to camp, friendly staff and cool store inside.

The trailer is perfect, everything worked as expected, but this trip was the real shakedown and all is good. Just have to replace the awning fabric.
