Learned a couple of things today!! and it continued...Page 2

Well we got a short notice opportunity to Park Host for the month of June.
When talking with the Host Coordinator I knew the host site would be interesting to get into. Required backing into a site on passenger side while backing up hill. This is not a mild uphill it is fairly steep. This is with a NV 4500 (AKA 5 speed manual).

Well #1 item on my to buy list is now a "2 Low" kit. Allows use of 4X4 low range without locking in front axle. This would allow no slipping of the clutch as in low range the speed is much slower.

Item #2 either a longer breakaway cable or better connection point!! I normally just place over the release handle. Well tight turn to passenger side up hill! I thought I had hit the cab with the 5er!! With a long bed and about 45 degree turn!! Nope, pulled the breakaway plunger (YES Trailer brakes work GREAT!). Took a minute to figure out why I was bound up with the 5er!! :S

Well once the plunger was replaced got the 5er in place with less drama.

The roads in the park are paved very hard on the transfer case! Also CAD 4X4 so no hubs to lock.
The adventure got better overnight, another post coming.

So what is the problem with driving a few FEET in 4 wheel drive with the front axle locked? It is at very low speed anyway.

Is it really that big of a deal? It seems to me that at such low speeds, and on dirt, you would not have a problem.

    Fred.

Some people think reversing in four wheel drive is harder to turn the wheel in tight turns

  • I do know that on the 2nd gen Dodges that have CAD I think is called center activated disconnect you can either do it with the vacuum or better with a mechanical cable that will disconnect the CAD and will let you put it in 4wd and not activate the front diff. I have purchased the stuff to build it but time has not allowed for me to do it. can purchase it. Not sure how the newer Dodges work.

Hubs lock automatically on most newer 4X4's.
  • Reminds me of my brother-in-law who used to tow his boat with a stick. One time he asked me to pull the boat out while he was doing something. After a couple tries where I though I was going to burn out the clutch, I put on the parking brake and had him do it. If the clutch was going to go, I wanted him to do it.

This is the one situation where I see a benefit to 4x4 for a non-off roader or course it comes with the question of how often will you really run into this situation.
