Not hard to prevent this if you're of a mind to. The sockets look like this (brands may vary.)

Notice the socket for the handle at right angles to the wall are deeper than the socket for positioning the handle across the door. Simply cut off the the portion nearest to us in the camera view below. Or glue a half round in the socket. Or insert a screw to prevent the handle from dropping in the socket in that position. Use your imagination for other methods.
