Try it from the outside....close the handle then pull straight out on it. IT will jump over the beveled area and open. And testing it this way will not leave a mark on your door.

I had not thought of this particular situation. So I went out to the 5er and tried it. The beveled end in the closed position will not allow the arm to LOCK against the door.
