What if someone closed it over the door in the middle of the night and a fire started inside the RV. Escape windows are for that purpose but how many of us have ever tried to open one, or would even remember where they were when waking up in a smoke filled RV?
It is frightening to me that you and everyone onboard does not know the location and operation of the emergency windows. I check the operation of mine at least monthly and make sure than everyone knows where they are located and how they work.
In your scenario waking up to a smoke filled RV, if you wake up at all, your life expectancy is measured in seconds because the materials used in RV construction release toxic gasses when burning. You will be blind and choking and that is no time to try and learn how the escape window works.
My plan is simple, we are grabbing the fire extinguisher and crawling out the door. You can hold classes every month on the proper method of removing and diving out of a 26"x18" exit window but I am pretty sure there would not be time for all that, unless you are always alone in your RV, or everyone is skinny enough they can all go out that window together and crash land below. When I can't breath or see I am pretty sure I ain't pulling no release on an escape window, but I will throw a shoulder into an RV door.
