Long Box--Short Box?

Thinking of going from a extended cab long box to a crew cab short box and was wondering how much difference will it be to hook up. Now I can see my pin and hitch and I’m not sure with a crew cab that still will be true?

Friend of ours recently bought a new Ram 3500 CC LB but he cannot see the hitch and he says it is because of the sliding rear window...he now attaches a vertical wand to the hitch to help in hooking up.

He must be short. I just skoot up a bit to see mine. If I took out the center back headrest it would be easy to see. 3500 Ram CC long box dually.

Guess I'm short, well there's no guessing really. Haha, anyway I do have the center head rest out and still can't see it. Is your raised up a bit? I'm thinking since mines on the lowest set of holes it puts it way down in the bed.

  • Mount yourself and convex mirror, like the ones they sell for side view truck mirrors, using a right angle bracket (a shelf bracket will work nicely), using two sided 3M tape (auto parts store), to the top of the pin box. You can then see both the pin and hitch in the mirror for less than $10. I would also stick with the long bed for a lot of reasons, not the least of which will it will be easier to see your hitch alignment.
  • I have a new 2013 Silverado crew cab with the standard(short) bed and I have no problem seeing my hitch to hook up.
  • Real Pickups have 8' Boxes!!!!! Once you have had a long one, short is just not the same!!!

  • It's not so much the hook-up but whether or not the trailer will hit the cab or rear window on sharp turns. It's a question of the distance from the pin to back of the cab. I would think a slider hitch will be a must.
  • FWIW I have a 12 Ram 2500 CC LB with the hitch set to it's lowest point (14") and I can't see it. Not sure about the different crew cab sizes, might make a difference.
