Given a choice - I would definitely go to a crew cab short bed. I used one for 10 years, both with and without a slider, and it was a pleasant truck to drive. The slider went away with rounded front frame on the new 5ers and longer pin boxes (trailair tri-glide)
Due to a heavier trailer and the extra capacity, we were forced into a dually. I need the tire and axle capacity, but I sure don't need all the wasted room in the pickup bed. The trailer barely uses 1/3. Sure I could add stuff to the bed, and the truck does tow better, but the trade off is a truck that I hesitate to drive for daily use because of the size and maneuverability.
