looking at used 5th wheels

I'm considering a 2006 Glendale titanium or a 2005 NuWa Hitchhiker.
From reading the forums, I get the sense that these are (were) well constructed FWs. Am I correct in that? Any other mid-00's FWs that are well constructed? Of course, as always, YMMV.....

Also, any opinions of rv.org? Worth the money to join?

Thanks!

  • Go to http://nuwaowners.org/forum/. They can answer about any thing on a NU-WA. I bought mine at a repo auction. We love ours. I've found it to be a well built solid rig. I plan on it being our last rig after another 15 yrs or so.

2005-2006 had some units that the axles were recalled. A quick look around the hub will show a incomplete weld. I had a hub break off, luckily going very slow while cornering in a campground. The axles weren't made by Nu-Wa. The axle manufacture let me pick up the axles in Goshen, IN, about a 2 hr drive. But I wanted to check other things in the area. Worked out really good as I picked up everything new from the wheels to the spring shackles, good to go for years.
  • Might be hard to find in your area of the country, but Arctic Fox by Northwood, MFG.(La Grande, Or.) has consistently been rated highly(RV Consumer Group, etc.). We are on our 2nd A.F., has about 25,000 miles on and still no problems. Lars
  • We were fulltimers for 10 years with pickup and fifth wheel. We spent 6 years in a NuWa HitchHiker II and the last 4 in a HitchHiker Champagne. When we had work done we stopped at the NuWa factory in Chanute, KS. Sometimes we had a bill to pay but many times the work was done as if it was warranty. We would recommend HitchHikers.
  • Can't go wrong with the Hitchhiker if it has been maintained and the floor plan works for you. Hitchhiker is one of the very few brands where you will find no or extremely few negative comments on the forums. Friends have a 2004 Discover America and its still a very nice rig. Randu
  • NuWa is out of production but the former factory has morphed into a dealer and service facility. They have quite an inventory of used Hitchhikers and, speaking from personal experience, the service facility is first rate.

In looking at the Titanium, make sure it is not one that was manufactured with the wrong axles length. Many had axles that were to short and they install offset wheels. The offset wheels cause bearing failures!

Dexter will be able to help you with information on the problem and may know which model years had the wrong axles.

  • Also look for an Alpenlite. All aluminum construction and had a reputation as one of the best fivers on the market. Qality did slip during the last 3-5 years they were in business, but they were still far ahead of other brands.
