I have an RBW hitch, now on it's third truck, that has a straight, slide across bar. Very safe and foolproof, if the bar is across it is locked. The problem is the bulk of the weight is against the single flat bar, resulting in wear the slack.
I am getting ready to retire and do some serious travel. I don't want a split jaw hitch where I have to pull test every hook-up to see if the split jaws are locked. It seems like I have seen fifth wheel hitches with a single forged jaw that wraps around the pin when it closes.
Any suggestions and experiences? Thanks
You LOOK at a split jaw hitch to assure it is closed just like any other hitch. And you do a pull test just like any other hitch. The truth is, none of the jaw methods are better than any other and all the hitches on the market are as safe as the humanoid operator. The only real differences are ease of operation and what appeals to individual users. Humans can screw up any hitch brand.
Maybe you should just repair the hitch you have with a new locking bar? Seems like you've liked it thus far.
