You LOOK at a split jaw hitch to assure it is closed just like any other hitch. And you do a pull test just like any other hitch. The truth is, none of the jaw methods are better than any other and all the hitches on the market are as safe as the humanoid operator. The only real differences are ease of operation and what appeals to individual users. Humans can screw up any hitch brand.
Maybe you should just repair the hitch you have with a new locking bar? Seems like you've liked it thus far.
